Just heard a great news story on the tele (Jeremy Paxman's Newsnight) about companies doing this sort of thing.
It's actually cheaper and has a bigger ROI than hiring inhouse employees to come up with something better. Netflix is gambling a million to find a methodology that works for their company without having the added headaches of contracts, consulting agreements, health benefits, etc. There was a gold company in Canada that did this. Opened up their records to the public to help them find gold deposits.
