I'm speaking for me. I know the dangers, been mortared on FOBs, been shot at in convoys. I personally wouldn't do it without being armed and support contract personnel aren't allowed to be armed.
Your buddy must have been there very early on, because the MOI is cutting off security contractors weapons permits, they certainly aren't giving them out to IT peeps. When it comes right down to it, the weapon isn't just for personal protection, but to prevent capture as well, the "save one for yourself" way. I'm not about to let them grab me and cut my head off.
