I've never met a project, not even a small one, that didn't require at least
some knowledge, some tweaking of the code beyond just what the "tools"
created, to get it working properly.

Given a choice between someone who knows the language, but is clumsy with
the tools, vs a person who knows the tools, but is clumsy with the
language....who would you choose?
