Let's be fair: Chernobyl should never be brought up when talking about
current nuclear issues.

The reactor was shoddily designed, horribly maintained and completely
mismanaged. The accident itself was caused by so-called "safety tests" run
by people more worried about getting their government managers angry than
actual safety. It was design failure under management failure under
operator failure under response failure.

The Chernobyl accident resulted from greed, pride and a sheep-like sense of
duty - not anything inherent aspect of nuclear power.

Saying nuclear power shouldn't be pursued because of Chernobyl is like
saying there should be no business anywhere because of Enron or no more cars
because of the Edsel or no more elections because of Florida. It's like
cancelling school for everybody because that one kid down the street is
retarded.

(For what it's worth I'm not a huge of nuclear power and I don't think it's
a good idea to build plants willy-nilly. Wind plants, solar thermal plants,
tidal plants and other, safer, less impactful solutions should all be tried
first. But my opinion on nuclear power is definitely not shaped by
Chernobyl.)
