Actually there's no evidence that it "vanished".  The braod civilization
died - in the blink of an eye geologically, but the decline occurred across
two centuries.  But the Mayans never disappeared: there were several more
periods dominated by Mayan city states in 9th through 13th centuries until
foreign influence broke their domination of the region.

A lot of current research suggests that they simply out-farmed themselves.
Models of how long it would take tillage farming to erode away the topsoil
to the point that the land would be unsustainable as farmland fit very
nicely with the historical lifespans of ancient cultures (especially large,
centralized ones) like the Mayas.

No magic men from Mars.  No Hotrods of the Gods.
