I read this as a last-ditch effort by the Administration to prevent a military conflict with Iran. Israel has more or less declared an Iranian nuclear weapon to be an existential threat. If you believe the Israelis, you have to believe that they see a military strike, however risky and however costly, as their only remaining option, and they are only going to wait so long. If no progress is made with Iran and Obama wins the election, I predict a strike before the end of the year. If McCain wins, who knows, there might still be a strike, but the Israelis might wait to hear what he has to say about the matter first.
