I didn't say "control" I said accountability. Leadership means
accountability for even those things you don't directly control.

As a leader you need to articulate principles and then act in
accordance with them via objectives. If, in the end, events out of
your control prevent you from accomplishing your objectives, you can
feel comfortable that you tried.

You were in the military right? Remember the "I go where I'm told to
go, I show up when I'm told to show up, and I do the best job I can."

That goes for the President.

So some of the questions are, therefore:

* Did the President work to control wall street "exuberance"? No.

* Did the President work to ensure banking regulation prevented a
meltdown? No. In fact he and Phil Gramm did the exact opposite.

* Did the President work with Greenspan to ensure that rates didn't
encourage a bubble? No.

* Did the President work to control the "shadow banking system"? No.

One could go on and on but one doesn't need to to see that Bush did
not try to control this problem despite the fact that he was warned
time and again from just about every source imaginable.

So he's accountable for that. Period.
