Fair enough, they were paid to play. But don't I discount their
gratitude toward the West and America in particular for freeing them
from Soviet tyranny. The US has been a good friend to the former
Soviet-bloc states.

Joe Wilson has been demonstrated to be a big fat liar and that
evidence was real, even if the documents were forgeries. Chri Hitchens
wrote a series of articles about it. Here is one from Slate:

They had ample justification to get rid of Saddam, a tyrant on the
list of top ten murderers of the twentieth century. Where is there
anything like this kind of justification for Russia to invade Georgia?
Where? Block attacks in South Ossetia? Sure. But stage a ground
invasion, blow up the port, sink naval vessels, occupy the central
town of Gori, threaten to topple the government? Where?

Apparently the Russians have now destroyed a key rail bridge west of
Tblisi. Oh sure, they are just protecting South Ossetia.
