> Is Lovecraft in there? It wouldn't be bad to add a Lovecraft or Poe novel/story
>> The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Wonderfully irreverent. >One of my absolute favorites (although the later ones _were_ a little self-indulgent).. They progressively got worse. The last was terrible and Adams pretty much admitted it. Too bad he died before he could clean it up. >> Dune - The depth of this book is incredible. >Too true. Nearly the perfect novel in my opinion. Just stay away from the prequels! ;^) The prequels and the two sequels (non-Frank Herbert) are awful. I read them for two reasons. I wanted to complete the series (They were all supposedly based on FH's notes). Second, I wanted to see how bad they could get. They were like a bad movie you can't stop watching because you want to see if it actually can get any worse. The answer is: Yes, they can get worse. Amazingly, they have done very well commercially. The depth of FH's work is nowhere found anywhere in these books. > Ender's Game - If you haven't read this, do yourself a favor and pick it up. It is sci-fi in theme, but there is so much more to it. >>I considered adding to it. I actually still love the book. But damn Orson Scott Card has been annoying me lately. He's also done all he could to drain any magic from it... the crazy sequels, the umpteen retellings, etc. I have only read the next book. I didn't care for it much. >> Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte >> Never read it. Probably never will. > well if you like dark gothic romances.... I can't relate, personally. Exactly. >> The Great Gatsby - The great American Novel. >I've read it, and do not understand its appeal. Superficial book about superficial people. The story is rather soap opera-ish. I like because of the flow and prose as well as the story. It was exceptionally well written. >> The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Wonderfully irreverent. >Yes. I'd add Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, possibly my favorite book ever. I love the the Long Dark Teatime of the Soul. I was disapointed that he never wrote a third book in this series. I didn't add it because HHGG had a much larger impact in fiction than Teatime. > The Godfather - better than the movie. >bla, ok. Ok story, >> The Bourne Identity - The prototype for today's spy thriller. >::eyeroll:: To each there own. > Devil in a Blue Dress - Walter Mosely I debated adding this one. It really is an exceptional piece of fiction. I have read about half the EZ Rawlins novels. So far, they have all been entertaining and informational. If you want to know what life was like for a black person in LA after WWII, you can pick up some good info. > Watership Down I wouldn't argue against this book. Probably should have added it to my list. > Snow Crash Looks like a lot of you dont' know much about this book. It is a cyperpunk thriller filled with conspiracies, mysticism, hacking, megacorporations, religious fundamentalism, and such. The book was written in 1992 and much of it set in the metaverse which is very similar to the internet. Here is brief synopsis from wikipedia of Snow Crash: At the beginning of the novel the main character, Hiro Protagonist, discovers the name of a new pseudo-narcotic, "Snow Crash", being offered at a posh Metaverse nightclub. Hiro's friends and fellow hackers fall victim to Snow Crash's effects, which are apparently unique in that they are experienced in the Metaverse and also in the physical world. Hiro uses his computer hacking, cognition, and sword fighting skills to uncover the mystery of "Snow Crash"; his pursuit takes the reader on a tour of the Sumerian culture, a fully instantiated laissez-faire<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laissez-faire>society, and a virtual meta-society patronized by financial, social, and intellectual elites. As the nature of Snow Crash is uncovered, Hiro finds that self-replicating strings of information can affect objects in a uniform manner even though they may be broadcast via diverse media, a realization that reinforces his chosen path in life. I also thought about the Three Musketeers. It is book with a lot of humor. I bet it would be a lot more enjoyable if I spoke fluent French. There is probably a lot word play that is lost in the translation. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;203748912;27390454;j Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:266217 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5
