I grew up before the car computers and without any money so if you
wanted a car you had to learn to work on them because a job as a
busboy doesn't get you even a decent used car.

So the funny thing is that in my neighborhood - every weekend, both
days - everyone was working on their cars in their driveways and
streets to keep them running during the week.

Usually Saturday you'd ride with buddies out to the "bone yard" and
then you'd plan on who's car you were going to work on since we had to
pool tools and know how.

I had this buddy who'd take apart his engine and just throw all the
bolts into a bucket. Then somehow he'd be able to figure out which
one he needed to put it back together.

Anyway, by the time I could afford a new car I had spent a decade and
a half working on junkers and never wanted to do it again so I've only
bought cars with a maint program since.

But now I've started getting into modding cars which has meant
learning all the computer stuff and it's actually really cool because
now you can tweak all kinds of things and monitor the effects in real
time - without driving! - by just monitoring the computer. It's
pretty cool. If I had more money and time I'd probably set up a
garage, get a used Evo or STi, and build it into a 800hp monster.
That would rule.
