Medvedev Condemns U.S. Use of Navy to Send Aid to Georgia

By Lyubov Pronina and Maria Ermakova

Sept. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev condemned the U.S.
navy's delivery of humanitarian aid to Georgia and accused the U.S. of
rearming the country following last month's five-day war between the two
former Soviet nations.

"The armament of the Georgian regime continues, including under the flag of
humanitarian aid," Medvedev said to Russian regional governors today in
Moscow. "It would be interesting to see how they would feel if our fleet
sent humanitarian aid to the countries of the Caribbean that recently
suffered a devastating hurricane."

The USS Mount Whitney yesterday sailed to Georgia's Black Sea port of Poti
with a cargo of relief supplies, anchoring about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles)
from a post manned by Russian troops. Russia recognized the independence of
South Ossetia and Abkhazia on Aug. 26 after fighting with Georgia over the
breakaway regions.

"Russia is a state that will be reckoned with in the future," Medvedev said
of the conflict. "Confrontation is not our choice. Russia will not allow
anyone to encroach on the lives and dignity of its citizens."
