but the office of the President entails a military rank, that of Commander in 
Chief. As such an officer, he was in an armed skirmish as president (foolishly 
if the southern forces knew about it), but it fits within what you defined.

Also the states militias at the time were the largest part of the US Army. They 
required the obligation to appear at a specified location  and dates for drill 
and other training. In other words basic military training for the time period.
