Gel's right on. In my experience with the 4 or so cats I've lived with/owned over the years, they need some stimulation to keep them from going crazy.
The cat we have now loves playing with a wadded up paper ball at about 11PM. Like clockwork, he'll bring his favorite (he has several stashed around the house) to the couch around 11, drop it at my feet, and we play fetch for about 20 minutes or so. It's very comical since he thinks that he is the Chocolate Lab's little brother. I really think that he thinks he is "supposed" to fetch since his big sis does. If I don't play with him before we go to bed, he will jump up on the bed and basically not let us go to sleep until we acknowledge his lack of exercise for the day. Get one of those laser pointer things (Wal-Mart has them cheap cheap). They are endlessly entertaining for both hooman and kitteh.
