Laissez Faire capitalism assumes that mankind is Greedy, and will always do what is only in his self interest. Therefore the corporation will produce a product of a quality only as good as what the Consumer, acting in his own self interest, will accept at whatever level the product is aimed at.
The idea is that if the Corporation produces an inferior product, the Consumer will reject it, and the corporation will fail. Therefore it is supposed to be in the corporation's best interest to create a good enough product. This entire premise falls down when one considers the reality, which is when the Consumer cannot determine whether the product is inferior or not. So a specialist organisation is created to oversee quality - Let's call this the FDA. But the FDA needs Capital to operate, and that Capital is governed by the principles of Capitalism. Therefore the very organisation that is supposed to inform the unsophisticated Consumer in making his Market choices is itself a slave to the very system that would produce these inferior products. How can we expect this organisation to be neutral, fair and unbiased? Systems are created to obfuscate the simplicity of arrangements with jargon,methods and manipulations such as the Financial System, the Legal System, the Political System so that there is never any hope that The Consumer (or Voter, but that's another topic) will ever be able to truly make an informed decision- They will make their decision based on what they are told through the Press (itself a slave to the Capitalist system) or better yet, through exploitation of emotional and psychological absolutes of the human condition - through advertising,marketing,PR Speak and 'Spin'. Therefore a Corporation which produces an inferior product is not necessarily going to fail because of Consumer Market influences.That notion is idyllic. Ergo the inevitable failure of the Capitalist system for the Consumer, i.e the People...the other 99%. And to bring this all back to the original topic - We may never know how these chemicals affect us, not maybe for many many years. We only know about all the issues with Chinese products now because it is of benefit to some Interest. Someone wants to Inform the Consumer at this present time, for a specific reason.Screws are being turned. To say otherwise would imply incredible incompetence and negligence on the part of every single worldwide regulatory agency. Or..this could just be the beer talking.
