Trust me, you should be laughing. I can hear the squirrels chattering about it right now.
Saturday night was the Halloween walk-around here in the campground (since it closes before Halloween, they always do it early). We had about 30 kids of varying age and preplanning of costumes wandering around. The youngest kids learned the "trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat" song, and practiced it on each camper. I was sitting out in my lawn chair (lafuma, soooo comfortable), in my pirate hat (with wig and feather), dark brown tshirt with a pirate skeleton fish, big pirate belt, etc. And on the table next to me was the candy plate, with a fake stuffed parrot on the edge of the plate. Two young kids come around the corner (maybe 3 years old, one a turtle, one a bumblebee), and stop very short. the whole pile of rushing kids behind them almost run them down. After a few seconds of them not moving, the older kids rushed by them for the candy plate. His grandmother says "dont you want some candy? say please". He just points to me and looks at her, and says "pirate!" His older brother decides to help, and points out the stuffed parrot and the candy. So now, fascinated by the bird, he walks as big a circle as he can around me, never taking his eyes off me, keeping everyone between me and him, until he gets to the parrot. Where he proceeds to pet the parrot, which falls off its perch onto the ground. "Ut Oh" he says. "It died". So I get up to help, taking off the pirate hat and wig, and he says accusingly "You aren't a real pirate!!!!" .. .. .. What exactly do you say to a kid at that point?
