The Republicans tried to kill the investigation because it became
inconvenient for the national party. John McCain tainted it with
presidential politics. Did he somehow think that selecting a VP
candidate with an active ethics investigation wouldn't arouse
scrutiny? And that one that was supposed to produce a report right
before the election might make it even more awkward timing?

Jesus, how many fucking idiots are involved here? The investigation
helped out the McCain/Palin campaign by releasing the report early.
Originally it was supposed to be produced days before the election,
but they didn't want that timing to influence things. A lot of thanks
they got.
