This is all related to my previous post on my problems with Bush's current
policies, but I will offer an alternative view ...

Not that I agree with this view, but it was shared with me by a friend who
has some good thoughts on these sorts of issues:

Bush knew Sharon wouldn't obey his order to withdraw without delay, but that
statement looks like he's being neutral. At the same time, you may remember,
Bush told Arafat to denounce terrorism to his own people -- Bush knows
Arafat can't do this without Arafat getting shot dead. But he's painted
Arafat into a corner with this dual attack -- he's putting the obligation on
Arafat to move further toward peace than Israel (they were going to
eventually withdraw anyway). When he doesn't the US has a pretext for
widening the war, both to topple Arafat from power and to achieve our
primary goal -- go to war against Iraq.

There's a certain amount of logic there, but I don't buy it. I think Bush
makes himself look inconsistent with very little diplomatic gain. Bush can
denounce Arafat now and he won't gain or lose any more friends among the
Arab countries. When we go to war in this region -- and we will go to war --
it will be against all of the Arab nations. None will stand by us; all will
denounce us and whatever little diplomatic maneuvers we make now won't make
a bit of difference.

The only advantage is to buy more time for a greater military build up and
troop movements.

H.

These two cities aren't that important, that is why they did it.

It is more of a symbolic gesture, Israel lightens the assault of some
areas, which helps Bush.
