I let it stay on inside the firewall, I let the firewall block outside
because there are still ping of death hack attacks where people up the byte
size on the ping to try and bring down your network by overloading the
bandwidth using ping. If its turned off you can always use tracert to see if
you can hop to the firewall then you know if your connected or not.

My networking admin has ping turned off on our firewall.  He did it  
years ago to cut down on script-kiddie activity.   Is this still a  
valid concern?  I'm curious since it makes connectivity issues a  
little harder to diagnose without it turned on.
