I'll define it at a high-level and then do a quickie comparative analysis: "Executive" meaning to execute. At a high level this usually means managing a P&L; managing an organization with strategy, tactics, and operations; and a "front office" which I'll differentiate from ops. Obama ------------ 1996-2004 Obama, in addition to his charity leadership work, has managed 3 major campaigns to success for the State Senate. This would be equivalent to managing small businesses. In 2000 he managed a failed run to Congress, in 2003 he managed a successful run to the Senate, and in 2007 began managing a 1/2 billion dollar organization to run for President. Palin ------------- 1996-2002 Palin successfully ran for mayor of Wasilla. She had an unsuccessful run for Lt. Gov in 2002, and a successful run for Gov. in 2006. ANALYSIS ------------------ Obama and Palin compare nicely as their executive experience is mirrored: (1.) Early career. Obama managed the larger P&L and the larger front office by 2 orders of magnitude in each case. (2.) Mid career. Both had failed runs for higher office. We'll call that a wash. (3.) Current career. Obama's state senate district was larger in both dollars and population than Alaska. His presidential campaign, a $500M organization, obviously exceeds in both scope and depth anything Ms. Palin has done. Thus both have 15 years of executive leadership with quite a large degree of success, however Mr. Obama's organizations have exceeded Ms. Palin's by orders of magnitude in terms of size and complexity. Further there's a question of what value executive experience, or experience in general, is to a President. For example, Dick Fuld was an Air Force Pilot until 1969 and then worked his way up in a billion dollar corp to CEO in 1994 and stayed there to 2008. His company is Lehman Bros. Thus my opinion of success is talent, temperament, and timing.
