Cerberus grabbed Chrysler, but the rest of the PEGs won't touch auto
and I'd love to know why.

TPG and Bain have tons of Airline experience: Continental, USAir,
AmericaWest, et al (and former offers out to United, Delta) and to
lots of success.

So why don't they like auto? It can't just be unions.

And typically PEGs don't gut management - they'll just bring in a CEO
like Storch at Toy'r'Us or the Bain dude at Burger King.

Anyway, point is, seems like it'd be a great idea to take them into
bankruptcy and then take them private.

Everyone knows Bethune and credit him with pulling out Continental but
nobody credits the PEG management who essentially fixed everything in
place and then quietly sneaked out and left him in place.

I guess that's the way they want it ;-)
