Interesting.  Did a quick google and found this:

won by teams who won the coin toss and then scored on their first
possession. That's only 28 percent."

I do know that for me, it sure feels like the team that wins the toss wins
the game.  Shit, kickers can make FG from 55+ yards routinely nowadays.
 Makes it a lot easier to get that first score.  I'm not defending the
decision (again, I'd love to see it changed to "each team gets at least one
OT possession")... just reiterating what I'd heard when the league opted to
not change the rule.

BTW, to bring this somewhat back on topic... the article linked to contains
the following:

"There isn't a coach in football who would go for a two-point conversion or
gamble on a touchdown if the option of kicking an extra point in the final
seconds of a game sends a game into overtime."  :)
