Didn't you see 60 Minutes two weeks ago?  They're doing it now.  A decade
ago at Emory they were implanting into patients' brains tiny glass tubes
whose interiors were microdeposited with gold.  After a few weeks the brain
tissue would make its way into the interior of the mouth of each tube,
making electrical contact.  The other ends of the tubes were wired to the
hardware controller that interfaced with the software.

After six weeks of intensive training, patients were able to move the mouse
entirely by thought.  It's much more refined today.
