Didn't you see 60 Minutes two weeks ago? They're doing it now. A decade ago at Emory they were implanting into patients' brains tiny glass tubes whose interiors were microdeposited with gold. After a few weeks the brain tissue would make its way into the interior of the mouth of each tube, making electrical contact. The other ends of the tubes were wired to the hardware controller that interfaced with the software.
After six weeks of intensive training, patients were able to move the mouse entirely by thought. It's much more refined today.
