Hockey questions:

1) A power play is a when either team has a man advantage. During
normal play, there are six players for each side on the ice. A power
play is created when a penalty is called that results in the player
having to go to to the penalty box. Play then starts again with the
team that received the penalty one man short.

Most penalties are 2 minutes long. It is possible for a player to get
more than one penalty at the same time. There are also "major"
penalties which are five minutes long, as well as other penalties that
can result in the player being ejected for 10 minutes or for the whole
game.

It is possible to be up to two men short on the ice at once.

2) Goalies usually leave the ice for one reason: To put six attackers
on the ice. There are two situations when this usually happens:
Delayed penalties and when the game is nearly over and the team is down
by one goal.

Delayed penalties are called when a penalty is called, but the opposing
team still has control of the puck, so play does not get stopped until
the team that got the penalty touches the puck. Since the penalized
team cannot touch the puck without stopping the play, the goalie leaves
and an extra attacker is put on the ice.

The second situation is self explanatory.
