1) I think they pre-pay for bulk mail so the cost is already paid for.
2) I got the best story. Around 2000 I opened up a interest bearing
checking account with CitiBank. For various reasons, I decided to close
that account. I close that account and get a confirm number. Three
months later, I get a bill from CitiBank. They are charging me for 3
months of checking account services because my balance was below the
threshold for free checking. My account balance is something like
-$53.92. $18 for 3 months and a .08 interest payment.
I call their customer support number and ask what is happening. It took
some time for the rep to figure out what happened but this is the story:
They closed my account, then reopened it because they had to put the 8
cents of interest payment somewhere. Since the account was open and
underfunded, they had to charge me. This conversation followed.
W: "Can we use some common sense and just get rid of that charge
since I never authorized this account to be re-opened?"
CR: "no."
W: "Is this my fault?
CR: "no"
W: "so you are telling me that you agree I shouldn't be charged
for this but you can't use common sense?"
CR: "yes"
She advised me to write a letter to CitiBank to get the charged revoked
and that is what eventually happened but I thought it was ridiculous what
I had to do. I wish I had made that call from work so I had it on tape.
