It's mostly luck, with a touch of knowledge. I happened to have a sizable amount of cash the week after 9/11 when the market tanked, so I bought a lot of cheap stock. I also got in on several early tech IPOs that were very lucrative, and cashed out of them before the Web bubble burst. I have a large chunk of Apple stock that I bought at roughly 10 dollars a share, and is now over 90.
Last fall, I bought gold and other precious metals, which are way up. This year, I've been buying stock at the lows, and holding.
