Here's the problem (IMO). If I say "I'm proud to be a Scotsman" no one has a problem (except those who don't want to see me in a kilt). This to me is identifying with my "culture". If I say "I'm proud to be white" or "I'm proud to be a White-American" I'm immediately branded as a racist.
However the same doesn't hold true if I was African-American, I could say "I'm proud to be black" or "I'm proud to be African-American" or "I'm proud to be Ugandan" or "I'm proud to be Haitian" etc. and no one will bat an eye, most people would applaud it. According to whomever, I am white, if I claim to be proud of my race then I am a racist.
