....that just popped into my head.
I have been paying attention to all the Digital Television messages for
the past year or so. We got our DTV tuners this month for both our
televisions since we do not subscribe to either cable or satellite and
our televisions are 10+ and 20+ years old cathode ray tubes. We also
got a Tivo Digital Video Recorder for Christmas from my father which
also incorporates a digital tuner {and receives Netflix 'View Instant'
movies which is really cool}. So we now have three digital tuners. I
feel we are well set for the February 2009 deadline for US television
stations turning off their analog broadcasts.
I just heard an advertisement for high definition digital radio while
sitting here working, listening to my radio headset. That advertisement
said 'make sure your next radio purchase is for an HD radio and get all
the digital and analog radio stations.'
My question is - are the analog radio broadcasts scheduled to be shut
down like the television broadcasts are? My understanding is that one
of the big reasons for the US going to digital television broadcasts is
to free up radio frequencies for emergency and wireless internet
services. If that is a valid argument supporting the television
conversion then it must be even more true for radio stations as there
several times more of them, aren't there? But I have not heard anything
like that so I wonder if it is planned in the future or not? Are all my
radios scheduled to not work anymore someday?
