The new government may, just may, be walking their talk about
accountability. I'm still dubious about oversight actually happening
but I have to admit that this is potentially a big step toward making
it happen.

A Cabinet level appointment whose job is to make sure that government
programs are actually doing what they are supposed to be doing. That
seems so...logical. I was a cautious supporter of the financial
services bailout but the thing that pissed me off is that the Bush
administration gutted oversight and stonewalled what it didn't gut. We
are looking at spending a lot more money to dig ourselves out of the
hole we are in and I think its not asking too much to at least make
sure that the money is going where it is supposed to. That used to be
Congresses job (power of the purse and all that) but Pelosi and Reid
have been remarkably adept at rolling over any time actual
accountability comes up. Blech.

I'm still cynical about this making a difference but at least it is
something more than rhetoric. And hopefully a lot more.
