For what it's worth, I did an onsite project for the air force and the people were really nice. They were very supportive too. I would recommend working for the military.
The contract was for x weeks. I finished the task in half the time. Since the base already had budgeted me for x weeks, the rest of the time they gave me other work to do. It made me feel good that tax money wasn't wasted. The data set I was working on required some sort of clearance level I didn't have. The first couple of days they had someone sit next to me to make sure I wasn't copying the data. They had someone follow me to the bathroom too. This was all pre 9/11 so I can imagine security got tighter. I used to put list this project on my resume and just put in **TOP SECRET** as the details. Was a good conversation starter during interviews.
