I do know that Airports use quite a bit of science and technology, some 
simple some inventive, to strongly encourage birds to *not* get in front 
of planes taking off and landing.  I've heard of smaller airports 
training dogs to chase birds away from the landing strips.  Also, as can 
be attested to yesterday, the planes *are* engineered to give the pilots 
every chance possible in the one in 10,000 take off when such collisions 
do occur.
