I recently had a tire blow out. Someone else was driving. I was asleep. I am omitting the name of the road service, because, to be fair, they have previously been fairly helpful. In other, um, contexts.
me -- Hullo? Road service? I have a flat tire. Do you have anyone who can come change it? RS - Yes ma'am, I am sorry to hear that ma'am, are you in a safe place? me -- um, moderately. The shoulder is pretty narrow but there aren't any cars. RS - Can you give me the address where you are? me - (glances around with a grin) uh, I am about 25 miles northwest of Lordsburg on Route 70. RS -- Lordsburg? me - That's in New Mexico. But I am in Arizona. RS -- Can you tell me where you are in Arizona, please, ma'am. me - I am about 25 miles northwest of Lordsburg. RS -- but what is your location? me - I am on Arizona Route 70. I am about 25 miles northwest of Lordsburg. RS -- (very long pause) How far are you from the border? me - the border? with Mexico? RS -- yes ma'am. me - depends which border... maybe 45 miles or maybe 90 from the bootheel. RS -- (long pause) but you are in Arizona. me - yes, we have not passed the sign yet. RS -- sign? me - there is a sign when you cross into New Mexico. RS -- so you are on interstate 70 in Arizona? me - no, route 70; Interstate 70 goes through Denver. RS -- in Arizona. me - yes. RS -- (long pause) how far are you from I-10? me - (eyeroll) I am about 25 miles northwest of Lordsburg. RS -- but what town are you in? me - (looks around) I am not in a town. The biggest thing I can see is a yucca. (a car passes us) RS -- but what is the nearest town in Arizona? me - in Arizona? I think we might be 70 miles southeast of Globe...... RS -- are you near Duncan? me - (consults with driver, who has found the jack and is changing the tire) we might be 40 miles from Duncan..... RS -- in Arizona. me - yes. Do you have someone in Lordsburg who can come? RS -- ma'am, I am not sure. (a car passes going in the opposite direction) me - do you have anybody in the area? RS -- I am still trying to find I-70 in Arizona. me - route 70. Interstate 70 is a completely different road. RS -- in Arizona. me - yes. Do you have a contractor in Duncan? RS -- ma'am, I am not sure. me - you asked me about Duncan. Are you looking at a list or are you just trying to find me on a map? RS -- (almost in tears) ma'am, I am don't know. me - you don't know if you are looking at a map? The reason I am asking is that we have the tire changed now but it's just a doughnut. We should probably buy tires. So is there someplace to do that in Duncan? RS -- (still upset) ma'am, I don't know. me - ok well... we are going to drive into Lordsburg now... RS -- (...) me - you have a nice day, ok? Don't worry about it. We are fine. RS -- (...)
