I couldn't agree more.

When I worked as a paramedic I used to say that the distinguishing line
between a good medic and a great medic was knowing when to bend (and
sometimes, break) the rules.  I would argue the same could be said in this
case.  These guys made a decision that went against their company protocols,
protocols that are probably in place to prevent chaos during events like
this, and I think it was the right call to make.

There were a lot of 'heroes' that day, from the pilot and flight crew, to
the people who responded in teh water taxis and boats.  Their quick,
decisive action likely saved many lives.
