I do believe in the fundamentals of the stimulus. However, and this is a big fucking however, it only works long term if we reign in government spending and pay down some debt after the economy starts to rebound. Borrow now, invest, get the engines going, then gradually pull back, putting surpluses into debt repayment and reducing future debt obligations for subsequent generations.
Obama is talking that way but I'm not going to give him a big huzzah until I actually see it happen. Especially since the spending will really come from Congress. When/if the country starts to turn a corner will Obama be willing to veto a spending bill from a Democrat-led Congress to impose fiscal discipline? I'll give him a pass on the omnibus bill that is heading to his desk as that is house keeping from a previous administration and we don't have time to get into it now. Next time around though, no free pass.
