OK, so Petraeus says an Iraq-style surge is not feasible there. Where do we
go from here, then? He is asking for more military but especially more civil
infrastructure support for what I can only call nation-building. Regardless
of how history judges Bush's decisions on Iraq and Afghanistan, it will go
down as one of the great ironies of American politics that Bush, who
professed no interest in nation-building as a candidate for government,
kicked off an era of nation-building unseen since WWII.
