Taos is a pueblo originally and still is. The classic multi-storied pueblos that you see in a lot of cliche-art are usually Taos Pueblo in shape. I am not certain of the dates for Taos specifically but if it follows the pattern of the other pueblos it's been there since somewhere between 1000 and 1350AD.
There was a "Taos Art Colony" -- it started in 1898 and I am not sure when it ended. Georgia O'Keefe worked in northern New Mexico a lot but I am not sure if she ever lived in Taos itself. While there are still a lot of galleries in Taos, the artists by and large don't live there. Too expensive. Like Santa Fe, it is for rich people who have a third or fourth home there and *buy* art.
