Pakistan's government reportedly placed opposition leaders Nawaz
Sharif, Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Imran Khan under house arrest Mar 15 to
contain their activities.

The arrests come a day before a proposed long march for restoration of
judges sacked in 2007 by the then President Pervez Musharraf.
Protesters clashed with police forces in Lahore, Sharif's home base
even as heightened tensions suggest divergence within the ruling
party.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke to president Asif Ali
Zardari and his main political rival and former premier Nawaz Sharif
to try to settle their differences through negotiations (Mar 15)
