ever seen the IBM 400-series "accounting machines" (programmable printer)
where you used patch cords to map columns on punch cards to columns on
report paper? met one of those as a jr in high school, age 16. then at jr
college a "mark sense" machine that turned magnetic pencil marks on cards
into punches.
