If you're looking for text only GoogleGroups is probably the best although many large companies (Microsoft, Adobe, etc) host their own servers/groups. For text only groups you can look here: http://freeusenetnews.com/newspage.html?date=Any%20Date But many of the major players have very reasonable rates for text only. Giganews (my preference) has a 3GB/month plan (text and binaries - so you have whatever you want as long as you don't want much of it) for $3 per month. Not a bad deal at all especially considering that they're up to nearly 6 years of text retention and over a full year of binaries (to my knowledge the best full-field retention in the business). I've been a customer for a few years and never had any reason to complain. But other have similar deals, some might be even cheaper but really... at that price you're talking what, 10 cents a day?
