If you're looking for text only GoogleGroups is probably the best although
many large companies (Microsoft, Adobe, etc) host their own servers/groups.

But many of the major players have very reasonable rates for text only.
Giganews (my preference) has a 3GB/month plan (text and binaries - so you
have whatever you want as long as you don't want much of it) for $3 per
month.  Not a bad deal at all especially considering that they're up to
nearly 6 years of text retention and over a full year of binaries (to my
knowledge the best full-field retention in the business).

I've been a customer for a few years and never had any reason to complain.

But other have similar deals, some might be even cheaper but really... at
that price you're talking what, 10 cents a day?
