Really? It's pretty simple: they set the standard for the American wife. (Probably soon to be spouse) They're the gender role model. I think that's where Hillary failed. Not many married women of her age identified with her strong career orientation. I think a LOT of women are going to identify with Michelle: strong, successful, but kids and family first and career second. She has a more informal style and she's strong but feminine. Also I REALLY think Americans are underestimating the power of the optics of having a black couple as our leaders. Here's Barak (with a name like Barak) coming from a broken family and an African father and Michelle coming from the South Side of Chicago and they're the leaders of the USA now. When Michelle met with those school girls, they weren't just random girls - they were "Council House" kids; which is kinda like "the projects" in the US. There's a theory held by some - me included - that says that the big catalyst, the accelerant, that leads to terrorism is a feeling of hopelessness and/or oppression. This is why even wealthy kids become terrorists. Well, if some looks at a rich-kid dope like Bush who bumbled his way into the Whitehouse that doesn't exactly scream egalitarian non-oppressor.
