I am convinced that there has been and continues to be far more going on
behind the scenes than we know about in the war on Islamic fundamentalist
non-state actors (no more war on terror, right?). Nevertheless, I disagree
with the notion that the State Secrets Act gives any administration immunity
from illegal behavior.

My feeling is that they are attempting to protect foreign governments,
particularly the Saudis but also many others, from having to reveal how much
they are helping us fight against terrorism. I understand the need for
discretion, but sooner or later these governments are going to have to stand
up publicly and acknowledge that they are fighting with the U.S., and that
is the right side to be on. In a way, it makes all of this very conciliatory
behavior toward the Islamic world very understandable, though I regard the
bowing in front of King Abdullah is a horrible breach of protocol.

Still, if Obama can bring governments in the Islamic world around to
publicly acknowledging the extent of their support for the fight against
terrorism, he gets a pass on the bowing and scraping and apologizing for all
the bad things we have supposedly done. It's like we're witnessing a
drawn-out Kabuki theater, and we can only see what's on stage, not what is
going on behind the curtain. I am very curious to see what comes next.
