I think this goes back to the issue of the intelligence community being too
transparent. If these groups are being surveyed, they should never know it.
You don't catch true enemies of the state by standing around waving at them
saying "we're watching you". You catch them by good old fashioned
infiltration and intelligence gathering.

By the same token, the US was built on the backs of dissidents. This country
would fail catastrophically if we sudden started arresting everyone with an
unpopular opinion.

Ooh, goody, this is a juicy topic we can all appreciate because it touches
every single person in the country. I agree on the one hand that the
conservative blogs are overreacting to the report, but I also agree that the
report is itself extremely alarmist. And I agree that we should fear
government structure more than any single governing person or party.

So what do we do now?

Obama's team needs to put a lid on this kind of idiocy. If they know about
specific groups, e.g. Aryan Nation, that need extra attention, then by all
means, spell that out, but otherwise this report is just another stupid
blunder by an administration that seems not to understand the political
situation it inherited.

Lots more to discuss, I hope I don't miss the best bits of discussion
tomorrow morning.
