In some jurisdictions (Louisiana I think) if its a very close election then 
there's a runnoff election - i.e., the election is done over. In some western 
districts, if the election is that close the race is decided by a poker hand. 
although I've never heard it for anything larger than a mayor's race for a very 
small town.
