I think it's demographics. Basically it's kids that make a movie via the first 2 opening weekends. Occasionally you'll get the indie film that a lot of people go to, but it's usually the Pixar or PG action movies that get the big bucks. Thus they figure that *we've* all seen Total Recall, but the new generation hasn't. So they do an action movie remake and they get all the kids AND the older fan boys.
