I think it's demographics.  Basically it's kids that make a movie via
the first 2 opening weekends.  Occasionally you'll get the indie film
that a lot of people go to, but it's usually the Pixar or PG action
movies that get the big bucks.

Thus they figure that *we've* all seen Total Recall, but the new
generation hasn't.  So they do an action movie remake and they get all
the kids AND the older fan boys.

The sad truth is, there's plenty of ideas, it's just that older
viewers don't reliably go see them in enough numbers to justify
production.
