I don't know that you can specifically conflate the 2 but certainly
Republicans are using rhetoric to manipulate emotions that encourages
and legitimizes this type of terrorism.

McCain saw this during his campaign: he used the fear and quasi-hate
speech to try to garner support.  To his credit, I think he realized
the horrific error that was when the wackos started coming out of the
woodwork and speaking up at his rallies.

The latest iteration of Republican candidacy has used racism and
division as demagogic tools to get elected.

Examples include:

* the Macaca Moment,
* Palin's reference to "the real America",
* calling Sotomayor a racist
* implying and insinuating that Obama isn't a citizen
* implying that Obama is a Muslim and/or is a terrorist.

This type of regression into the dark ages does, however, set the
stage for new honorable leader of the Republican party.

Maybe Pawlenty.
