_State of the Browsers — IE edition_
"Basically, IE6 will continue to exist when IE7 has all but disappeared,
and, contrary to what you might expect, this situation will create
exciting opportunities for Microsoft’s competitors."
...

The point I found interesting was how corporate dependency on intranet
applications that only work on IE6 could be working to the detriment of
the IE browser overall.

The argument basically goes that a lot of intranet applications where
developed during the IE6 heyday of 2000-2005. As such, either through a
conscious decision or programmer laziness, these applications where
written such that they only work on IE6. Since these applications are
still 'working' just fine and would be very expensive for corporations
to upgrade so that they work on newer browsers, even IE7 or IE8, these
companies are just going to keep using IE6 for as long time into the
future.

But as more and more public internet applications realize that only
daytime office workers are using IE6 and start creating more and more
web applications that will no longer work properly with that ancient and
deficient browser. This will lead to a future where general office
workers will need at least two browsers, just like us. Since there is no
*official* way to install more then one version of an IE browser on a
desktop computer, conservative, cooperate IT sys administrators will be
very likely to install one of the other modern browsers as a second
browser -- rather then use any of the unofficial ways to include
multiple IE browsers on a system.
