Are you looking for something that runs by itself, has an OS or something
because (not being sarcastic) if you want the real lazy route why not buy a
cheap western digital NAS? I have a 500gb one that has both network and usb
access and looks like a little router software built into it. That's what I
got as a cheap backup and found it on ebay as an open box item cost less
then a regular 500gb usb drive.

Subject: Drobo, NAS, RAID... etc

So my home desktop is configured with large mirrored drives as a
simple protection from a single drive failure. This past week, one of
the drives failed. I need to either replace it, or switch to some
other storage mechanism. Anyone have any suggestions for either an
attached storage or network storage that I can use as a primary
storage device and potentially backups of laptop and other devices?

I'm really looking to go the lazy route here - something that works
well out of the box, like Drobo (http://www.drobo.com/) over something
that I have to learn and install and keep updated (like an Ubuntu box
on the network).

I really like Drobo's ability to mix different drive types and sizes.
I'm guessing it's not the only product that offers this, though I
haven't found another one in my 10 minutes of Googling around.

Anyone have suggestions for anything else I should look at?
