That is much the reason I have one (in Michigan). My wife drives a Mazda
626 back and forth 60 miles on I94 during the winter, and she never has a
problem as long as she can get out of our road (out in the country), but
when she goes into a ditch, she's stuck there. However, my 4WD gets right
out, and can go pull her out if needed. But I do agree with everyone that
some SUV drivers have an invincibility complex.

I will agree with you that some people who have SUVs think they are
invincible. They are the morons in the ditch. However in Michigan I
saw more Toyotas and Hondas in the ditch versus trucks. In a white out
I ended up having to put my truck in the ditch, either that or get hit
by the idiot next to me. I turned on the 4WD and drove right out. At
the same time there were other cars that couldn't do the same.

During that bad set of blizzards in the area several years ago (1996), I
was
commuting to a job about 60 miles away. Most of the other vehicles that
were
sort of on the roads were SUV's - mainly stuck in snow or turned over.
Myself I was driving a Geo Metro and had no problems getting around in
that
weather. 4WD is not really necessary, you just know how to drive in
snow.
