In a word yes. There are so many applications of this in evidence
based medicine (I consult on this regularly), environmental studies
are two examples.

One study I gave to the EPA for instance looked at ways to increase
recycling. I developed a formula that been shown to increase recycling
behavior by over 50%. You ought to see the results over the next
couple of years. But you're not going to notice because it uses social
marketing methods, I found that these were the most effective means of
encouraging people to recycle, both in terms of frequency and in the
amount recycled.

Other examples include recent withdrawals of heart medications from
the market. The meta-analyses done on the studies involved showed that
generics were as effective and had fewer side effects. It may have
resulted in the saving of several thousand lives.

Does your doctor suggest you start taking aspirin regularly? Again
that's the result of a meta-analysis that was done in the 90''s.

I've done a series of meta-analysis looking at non drug methods of
pain control, identifying those that work the best and what factors
that may influence the therapeutic effectiveness. That have very large
implications for the treatment of both chronic pain and short term
pain. such as post op pain.

Brain imaging research is another area, isolating the different neuro
pathways for attentional processing for instance, or looking at the
effects of temporal lobe strokes and rehabilitation.

How about teaching methods - there have been a couple out recent that
are in the process of turning teaching on its head, or the
effectiveness of training methods - the military is applying those
results of a meta-analysis for recruit training.

One study I conducted looked at the effectiveness of different
psychotherapies. That has enormous implications for medical insurance.
Insurance companies are more likely to pay for those therapies that
are found to be effective rather than those where you go to some
bearded Fraudian for years moaning about your childhood.

Just do a google search and you'll see what I am referring to. Its a
very powerful tool that directly addresses the stuff Sam was whining
about. BTW this is just a few of the things this tool is being used
for. The thing I like about it is the ability of this methodology for
cutting through the bullshit.
