Working on cars was one of the biggest "right tool for the job"
learning experiences for me.
I guess it depends on how often the average home mechanic is an home
mechanic, tho, because the "good ones" fabricate whatever tools they
need, and still get the job done fast. :-)p
Making a oil filter wrench, for instance. I make one more often than
not, because, "WTF did I put that damn thing?". :)
Pulling up on curbs, building stone-age stone-henge type 2x4 jack-stands...
A good socket set is a must. A 4 ton floor jack is pretty helpful too.
Hrm. Wonder if we can get Larry to meta-analyze how long the average
home mechanic (willing to take on engine mounts) would take vs. a
shop. I'm sure the shop would [almost] always win, but I wonder if it
would be by as large a margin as one would think? There are some
pretty kick-ass home mechanics out there.
Not that I'm one... took me a grip to switch out a transmission in my
Lincoln Mark IV (lots of, um, "fabrication" time, and all the beer
might have contributed to the duration-- good times).
That was a freaking fun car. *sigh* 'Course, working on new cars
takes a laptop and an adapter, at least, and sometimes a cherry picker
just to change the filters.
Yeah, cars is also one of my biggest "if they'ed engineered it
better"... experiences. I love good engineering.

not encountered the problem of parking his automobile.
