Fall is upon us and that means that the greyness is gathering, the temp is cooling and people are settling in for the moist, cool many month stretch ahead of us.
But, autumn also means harvest here. Hop harvest started the beginning of September and now we are seeing the first fresh hop beers out in the pubs. State-wide celebration of the hop harvest goes all through October. Mid to late September started the outdoor marijuana harvest. Some of it is legal, some of it is not. Regardless, the fine cousin of the Hop gets a noble treatment in the Northwest and the crops are drying as we speak. Not so much my thing, but I appreciate how happy it makes many of the people around me. And finally, grape harvest is well under way. The yield this year seems to be both quality and abundant. That may cause some trouble amongst a market somewhat restrained by the recession but overall my winery peeps tell me that it is a good year and they are glad to be hauling in the grapes. I gathered friends tonight and made Venison Bourguignon with roasted garlic mashed potatoes. Good people, hearty food, a nice bottle of wine or two and we can meet the impending soak head on. Here's to the months of indoor recreation ahead of us.
